Introduction to ABDL: What It Is and What It Isn't

A comprehensive, non-judgmental guide to understanding ABDL dynamics, terminology, and community values.

Written for consenting adults aged 18 and over. This is not medical advice. If something in here touches on your health, talk to a doctor about it rather than a guide on the internet.

What is ABDL?

ABDL stands for Adult Baby / Diaper Lover — an umbrella term for adults who enjoy age regression, diaper wearing, or caregiver/little dynamics as part of their personal or relationship life.

This is always a consensual, adult activity between adults 18+.

Common Terminology

  • Little: The person who takes the regressed or childlike role
  • Caregiver / CG: The person who takes the nurturing, parental role (also: Daddy Dom, Mommy Dom, Big)
  • Age Regression: A coping or recreational practice where an adult mentally shifts to a younger headspace
  • Dynamic: The agreed-upon relationship structure between caregiver and little
  • Scene: A planned or spontaneous period of engaging in the dynamic
  • Aftercare: Care and grounding provided after a scene

What ABDL Is NOT

  • It is not related to attraction to minors in any way — ABDL involves consenting adults only
  • It is not a mental illness or disorder
  • It is not inherently sexual — many practitioners engage with it purely for comfort, stress relief, or relationship bonding

Community Values

The ABDL community generally holds these core values:

  1. Consent — everything must be negotiated and agreed upon
  2. Safety — physical and emotional safety first
  3. Discretion — keeping the dynamic private and respectful
  4. Communication — open, honest dialogue between all parties
