Consent & Negotiation: Building Your Dynamic Safely

How to negotiate, set boundaries, and build a dynamic that works for everyone involved.

Written for consenting adults aged 18 and over. This is not medical advice. If something in here touches on your health, talk to a doctor about it rather than a guide on the internet.

Why Consent is Everything

In any ABDL dynamic, informed, ongoing, enthusiastic consent is the foundation. Without it, nothing else matters.

The FRIES Model

A useful framework for consent:

  • Freely given — no pressure, manipulation, or coercion
  • Reversible — anyone can withdraw consent at any time
  • Informed — everyone understands what they're agreeing to
  • Enthusiastic — genuine willingness, not just tolerance
  • Specific — consent to one thing isn't consent to everything

Negotiation Checklist

Before starting a dynamic, discuss:

Hard Limits

Things that are absolutely off the table for either party. Non-negotiable.

Soft Limits

Things that might be explored cautiously with care and communication.

Interests & Desires

What each person hopes to get from the dynamic.

Practical Matters

  • How long sessions last
  • Safe words and signals
  • What happens if someone isn't feeling well
  • How to pause or end a scene

Safewords

Always establish a safeword system:

  • Red — Stop everything immediately
  • Yellow — Slow down, check in
  • Green — Everything is good, continue

Non-verbal signals are important too — agree on a gesture or signal for when speech isn't possible.

Ongoing Check-ins

Consent isn't a one-time conversation. Check in regularly:

  • Before each session: "Are you still comfortable with our agreement?"
  • During long sessions: Regular check-ins
  • After sessions: Aftercare and debrief

*Always have these conversations outside of any dynamic or scene, in a neutral headspace.*
